Lightscapes Northumberland and Borders Workshop
Workshop Dates for 2019
Friday 26th - Monday 29th (1 Place, Max 5)
'My first photographic workshop with Gary, in Northumbria has exceeded all my expectations. The quietly confident guidance together with a good knowledge of the best photographic locations, made for a very enjoyable and productive experience. So thank you Gary, for an excellent workshop
and your much appreciated tuition.'
P.Wallbank April 2017
I could not let another day pass without reiterating the comments I made to you at this weeks Northumberland workshop. It exceeded my wildest expectations and I learnt more in the four days with you than I had in all the previous workshops combined. Your relaxed style and willingness to explain your own method of working was a revelation and even more so was the considerable time you spent with each participant improving their own technique and knowledge. I did not feel at anytime I could not ask for help and guidance and this was always forthcoming in a very understandable and constructive way.
The Northumberland coast has long been a place of artistic interest. These locations were made classics by the landscape painters, J.M.W.Turner and Thomas Girtin, they painted here extensively on their tours of the North Country.
Keith Weil Northumberland Workshop Testimonial
My Northumberland workshops are positioned in the week so we have the beaches and classic locations to ourselves.
We will be taking photos from Dawn to Dusk during the week so these popular beaches will be empty. They provide some of the most stunning coastal locations Northern England has to offer. The opportunities for great photography are endless in this corner of the North East. I will take you to classic locations but with some new viewpoints and angles.
Castles, Harbours and Long Exposure Sea scapes will be covered in this workshop of Northumbria. The programme is aimed at people who want to improve their photography and composition at all levels. You may have a good understanding of photography and simply want to be guided to breathtaking scenery and add stunning photos to your portfolio.
All the workshops we run are based on a very relaxed format to make the most of your time and importantly enjoy the beautiful surroundings. I don't chase around the countryside from one location to another. This course is also about learning to slow down and study with your eyes. Understanding what is happening in nature and the weather patterns is a huge part of taking a great photograph.
I will show you to use your eye's and resolve the compositional puzzle that is presented at each new location we visit. I will also give you an insight on how to read the weather so you know when to anticipate dynamic light.
Bamburgh Castle Wave Lines
We will be staying for 3 nights at the Victoria Hotel in Bamburgh
The hotel is perfectly placed to explore all of the Northumberland Coast and its wonderful photographic potential. It has excellent facilities to relax in after the days photography.
Small Workshop Group Size
A large part of my courses are about learning to see where an image is going to develop and looking at the landscape with a new eye for composition. As I only take small groups of photographers to the locations, we can easily stop along the routes to make images all through the day.

What you need
Bring along the camera equipment you are most familiar with and have a good understanding of its basic settings. Most cameras work in a simular way so I can help with some of the finer points.
It can be digital or film, I use both, the only point I would add here is that it is nice to view the days photographs in the evening all together, digital photography allows for this activity.
Fitness- The photography does require some moderate beach walking this can be over mostly sand, there are some rocks for coastal work so a good pair of walking boots or wellingtons with grip would be beneficial. They can be slippy when wet but the routes to the sand are clear and the rocks are avoidable if you wish to keep off them.
Waterproofs - Just in case.Wellingtons as above for coastal work.
Arrival - We meet up in the reception of the Victoria Hotel at 3.30pm-4.00pm on the first day. We can then head out for the first photographic shoot of the workshop. This will leave plenty of time to be back at the Hotel for Dinner and discuss the photography and the morning location.
A Deposit of £200.00 is required to secure your place on a workshop, with the balance paid 8 weeks prior to the date of the workshop.
